STRATEGIC
COMMUNICATIONS
Communications
should be viewed and utilized as a tool for competitive advantage.
At WPNT we help our clients embrace a coordinated, managed approach
to internal and external communication, rather than a knee-jerk
reaction to negative events or attention. We approach strategic
communications as a blend of philosophy, planning, research and
analysis, skill building and identification and implementation of
tactics. Our consulting services range from highly focused specialty
tasks to managing a client's entire communications project from
"soup to nuts."
Either way, we make sure our services are tied to business objectives
and drive results.
For
example, a Fortune 100 company recently called upon our issues
management and strategic planning services before launching a high-visibility
expansion program in a new state. The initiative was certain to
result in intense media scrutiny and stakeholder involvement. For
competitive reasons it was important that regulatory filings, government
notifications and stakeholder outreach were carefully orchestrated.
Key constituencies had to be identified well in advance, their concerns
considered and addressed.
WPNT was retained to provide strategic oversight to accomplish
these goals and facilitate the development of a communications plan
and timeline. Our first task was to build consensus among disparate
internal entities including senior management, operations, regulatory
affairs, legal, public relations, government affairs, and outside
contractors. In a fly-in meeting at a convenient airport facility
we brought representatives of each group together to agree upon
the overarching strategy, identify tactics and assign tasks. Utilizing
a template developed by WPNT, we guided the team through the process
of a building an effective communications strategy to advance the
company's business interests. Because time was of the essence, press
releases, talking points, handouts, and other communication tools
were finalized through follow up e-mails and conference calls.
In the end, the plan went off without a hitch, the project
was a success and the client was delighted.
